Midtown Alliance At Work

Monthly Construction Update

Each month, we provide a construction update on our current Public Space Projects.  See what's happening as we give you more to love about Midtown.

Updated -- May 6, 2013

Recently Completed:

10th Street Temporary Pocket Park (at 10th/Peachtree) – We are thrilled about this collaboration with Dewberry Capital to create a temporary “pocket park” at this high-visibility location in the heart of Midtown.  The new space (located at the northeast corner of 10th and Peachtree Streets) includes a lawn for lounging in the grass or outdoor games, seating areas to provide comfortable spots to enjoy lunch, and water-wise plantings designed in partnership with the Atlanta Botanical Garden.  The new seat walls, landscaping and lawn are complete with adjacent sidewalks being installed throughout May as part of the 10th Street Streetscape Project (more on that below).

District-Wide Tree Replacement Program – We recently spearheaded a seasonal effort to identify diseased, dying and missing street trees and replace them with new, healthy, urban-tolerant street trees throughout the entire Midtown Improvement District.  As a result, over 50 new street trees were installed in March.

Ponce Triangle Plaza – Following years of planning and study, we are excited that this new plaza at the intersection of Peachtree Street and Ponce de Leon Avenue is finally open.  This transformative space includes high quality granite paving, shade trees, seat walls, shrubs, perennials, decorative fencing, interpretive signage, and a reinvigorated memorial to Atlanta’s 19th Century Streetcar System.

Under Construction:

South Midtown Pedestrian and Circulation Improvements – The final phase of construction is underway on Peachtree Street between Ponce de Leon Avenue and 3rd Street (near the Fox Theater and Georgian Terrace).  This high-profile area will soon have new sidewalks, new pavers, granite curbing and upgraded handicap facilities.  The overall project is a $4 million multi-faceted effort to improve circulation, upgrade streetscapes and create new public spaces along Ponce de Leon, North and Linden Avenues.  Construction crews will be performing sidewalk replacement near the Georgian Terrace and Hotel Indigo throughout May.  As part of our work we will be removing several diseased trees which will be replaced this Fall.

10th Street Cycle Track - Building on our recently-completed bicycle facility project on 5th Street, we have partnered with The City of Atlanta and the PATH Foundation to envision a two-way "cycle track" on 10th Street along Piedmont Park.  As an extension of the recently-completed Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail, this new dedicated bike route will connect cyclists to Piedmont Park, the Midtown commercial core and the Midtown MARTA Station as well as future cycliing facilities on Juniper Street, Piedmont Avenue, and 10th Street.  Phase 1 between Monroe Drive and Charles Allen Drive is funded with construction activities occurring through July.  A grand opening is anticipated in August.

10th Street Streetscape (Williams Street to Piedmont Avenue) - The overall project includes installation of new sidewalks, street trees, pedestrian lighting, landscape medians, handicap upgrades and a new signalized mid-block pedestrian crossing at the Midtown MARTA Station.  Phase 1 between Williams and Peachtree Streets is almost complete.  Phase 2 is starting now, with construction crews working on the north side of 10th between Peachtree and Juniper throughout May and June.

Peachtree Street Streetscape (Peachtree Circle to Peachtree Street bridge) – This continuation of the Peachtree Street streetscape includes new lights, street trees, and wider sidewalks between Peachtree Circle and the I-85 Bridge.  Final work will be wrapping up over the next month including signal improvements at the Peachtree Circle intersection as well as "energizing" new streetlights throughout the project..
