Research Labs

Midtown is home to dozens of targeted research labs working directly with business leaders and practitioners to bring new innovative approaches to a myriad of disciplines from health IT, computing research, broadband applications and technologies, to biomedical electronics and photonics.  Captured here are some of the largest.  

Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI)

GTRI is a nonprofit applied research organization that employs 1,500 and is involved in over $200 million in research annually for more than 200 clients in industry and government. Its work spans a variety of disciplines, including national defense, homeland security, public health, education, mobile and wireless technologies, and economic development. It encompasses over 25 interdisciplinary research centers working across over 20 different labs and facilities. In operation since 1934, GTRI has inventors named on 62 issued active patents and 39 pending patents in the United States.

Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI2)

EI2 is Georgia Tech’s primary business outreach organization, providing services to business, industry, entrepreneurs, and economic developers with the common goal of improving their competitiveness. In addition EI2 has become the link between industry and the Georgia Tech campus, presenting connections to Georgia Tech resources, including world-class research, state-of-the-art facilities, and internationally-recognized faculty.

Interoperability & Integration Innovation Lab (i3L)

i3L is a virtual and physical collaboration laboratory for Health IT thought leaders and practitioners. The I3L provides access to a growing Health IT innovation network, with both open source and commercial resources.

Graphics, Visualization & Usability Center (GVU)

GVU is an interdisciplinary research center that brings together people and expertise from all six Georgia Tech colleges in order to solve complex problems through fundamental and applied interdisciplinary computing research.

Georgia Centers for Advanced Telecommunications Technology (GCATT)

GCATT is a leading provider of communications, computing and content processing research into broadband applications and technologies. Its strategic themes include Optical-Wireless Convergence; Future Networks; Signals, Events and Spaces; Elastic Gateways for Healthcare; the national Gig.U initiative; and Broadband Policy & Neutrality.

Georgia Tech Broadband Institute

Georgia Tech Broadband Institute is a multidisciplinary center that brings together the best minds in academia and industry to define significant research problems in all aspects of broadband communications. Areas of expertise span wireless and optical systems and multimedia communications, including sensor networks, cognitive radio, information security, distribution of personalized content, mobile gaming, and such diverse residential applications as Three-Screen and 3D-Television, and Aging-in-Place.

Translational Research Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Science (TRIBES)

TRIBES links biomedical research and educational activities at Georgia Tech with key medical institutions and organizations to provide critical capabilities for pre-commercial engineering development activities for license and transition of technology into industry for the benefit of diagnosis and treatment of patients in the healthcare system.

Georgia Electronic Design Center (GEDC)

GDEC is a cross-disciplinary electronics and photonics research center focused on the synergistic development of high-speed electronic components and signal processing to achieve breakthrough system performance. With more than 15 active faculty and over 100 graduate and undergraduate students, it is one of the world’s largest university-based semiconductor research centers.

Institute for People and Technology (IPaT)

IPaT connects industry, government and nonprofit leaders with Georgia Tech’s world-class researchers and innovations to transform media, health, education and humanitarian systems. IPaT integrates academic and applied research through living laboratories and multidisciplinary projects to deliver real-world, revolutionary solutions that balance the needs of people with the possibilities of new technologies.

Information Security Center

Information Security Center works to invent and evaluate the innovative user-centric security technologies and policies that will yield significant impact; educate and train researchers, policy makers, and information security leaders in the most up-to-date methods for securing information systems, and provide a trusted set of resources and a safe haven where individuals and organizations can access, understand, and evaluate issues related to new technologies and policies.
