Communications Coordinator

Midtown Alliance is a coalition of business and civic leaders focused on promoting economic development and creating an exceptional urban experience in Midtown, Atlanta. Priorities include infrastructure improvements, public safety, transportation and urban design and planning, beautification, economic development and communications and marketing. Midtown Alliance is a non-profit organization and is governed by a 15-person Executive Committee and a 70-person Board of Directors. Midtown Alliance operates with a full-time office staff of 24.  

Since 2000, Midtown Alliance has leveraged more than $400 million in public and private funding to plan, design, and construct improvements in the public realm to include sidewalks, bicycle facilities, traffic signals, and other urban infrastructure. These investments have transformed Midtown's major corridors by improving safety, access, mobility, and aesthetics - all of which reinforce the district's strong urban identity.

Position Description:

Our team is responsible for creating and sustaining interest in Midtown Atlanta as a place to live, work, create, invest and explore. As our intrepid Communications Coordinator, you will work every day to implement Midtown Alliance’s digital media strategy, including gathering, developing and scheduling content for distribution across all our channels. This role also supports some administrative and engagement tasks for the Membership Department.

Key responsibilities fall into three areas:

1. Sit at the controls and drive our digital platform, publishing quality material that stays true to our brand and message. This means you will be called upon to:

  • Own every pixel of our branded websites
    • Work in coordination with the Marketing & Communications Manager on web content management, including regular informational updates
  • Pump rocket fuel into the Midtown ATL social media machine
    • Manage a social media master calendar
    • Monitor all channels, engage and respond promptly to comments
  • Execute to perfection our segmented e-mail marketing campaigns
    • Oversee development and distribution for Midtown Alliance supplemental email marketing campaigns and departmental e-Communications, including newsletters, notifications and public safety e-Alerts
  • Ride herd on the online Midtown community event calendar
    • Manage event calendar database and innovation site calendar, including actively creating listings and approving submissions
  • Build up readership on our blog
    • Plan out and supply compelling, multimedia blog content that advances our message as a community development entity and an exceptional urban place
  • Keep score on how the digital platform is performing
    • Conduct reporting and analysis against key performance indicators for exposure, viewership and performance

2. Work with the team to pursue and develop great stories with a strong call to action, including interacting with internal staff to gather news on organizational initiatives and liaising with external partner organizations to amplify their messages relevant to Midtown. This means you:

  • Coordinate projects with other content producers in our network
    • Assist with planning and logistics for communications projects such as interviews, photo and video shoots
  • Add bench strength to our desktop publishing needs
    • Provide basic design, layout and coordinate printing/production for Midtown Alliance communications pieces, both digital and traditional
  • Act as a reporter and gather material in the field as needed
    • Conduct phone and in-person interviews, capture photos and video, provide basic editing for departmental needs
  • Provide extra support for communications projects  
    • Execute some database query and mail merge projects, keep watch over a general e-mail inbox, and help with other assignments as needed

3. Add capacity with back-office support for projects and recurring assignments that add value to Midtown Alliance’s growing membership base, working in coordination with the Director of Member Engagement. Your charge in this area will be to:

  • Maintain current info about participating retail members to maximize their visibility
    • Regularly update member directory listings online
    • Maintain an accurate and complete list of member deals participants
  • Manage promotional communication projects to support member engagement
    • Oversee development and distribution for membership e-mail marketing campaigns and event-related e-mails
    • Create contact lists for Member communications, including mail merges
  • Give executional help where needed for special projects
    • Assist with registration intake for member events, including pre-event online RSVP setup, ticketing, name badges, and onsite guest check-in at member events
    • Execute some occasional database query projects, collate and deliver materials to member contacts as needed


Our Communications Coordinator is a strong communicator with a keen understanding of what works in digital media. A successful candidate is detail-oriented, reliable, knows software and systems and can deftly move between them. A person in this role will succeed if they are extroverted, a good time manager and independent worker, flexible, and enthusiastic about Midtown Atlanta and Midtown Alliance programs and initiatives.

BA Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Advertising or related field

Requirements and Skills:

  • 2-3 years of experience in PR, corporate communications, community outreach, destination marketing or media production with emphasis on applying journalistic storytelling principles to content marketing
  • Direct experience with managing social media and digital marketing channels for a client or employer
  • Systems experience with website CMS (Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, etc); e-mail marketing platform (Mailchimp, Constant Contact, etc); CRM system (Salesforce), content scheduling (Hootsuite); Google Analytics
  • Basic HTML and CSS
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite products, including Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Competency with a photo and video camera is a strong plus
