Atlanta Mayoral Hopefuls Share Ideas with Community at Let’s Talk Midtown Event

Ahead of November 7th election, Midtown residents, workers turn out for up-close conversations with mayoral candidates

At 1.2 square miles, Midtown Atlanta represents less than 1% of the City’s land area but comprises more than 16% of the City’s residential population and 70K daytime workers, many of whom live inside the City as well.

Outside on the Colony Square plaza against the backdrop of a bustling city, and a month before the November election, Midtown’s influential voter base got the opportunity to meet with 10 mayoral candidates for intimate discussions on Atlanta and Midtown’s path forward.

Mayoral hopefuls were sent a copy of the Midtown community’s interests and priorities as reflected in our 2016 Midtown Community Survey (20-minute read). Attendees from the Midtown community of residents and workers were asked to consider the most important things they wanted to hear from the candidates and to share those with Midtown Alliance when they RSVP’d. We received hundreds of submissions and organized into these questions that were most important to the Midtown community:

  • There is unprecedented growth happening in a concentrated area here in Midtown. How will you make sure our city’s infrastructure keeps pace?
  • Homelessness and panhandling, and their impact on people’s perception of safety at street level, is a citywide issue. What steps will you take to prioritize solutions for the city to address homelessness and panhandling and their root causes?
  • Voters approved MARTA referendum funding for future transit projects. How will you define city priorities for transit and make sure they happen?
  • What steps are you prepared to take on housing affordability, and why do you think they will work?
