RECAP: Commercial Row Commons Onsite Input Session Generates Excitement for Public Spaces

Published: 8/9/18*A conceptual design

Commercial Row, the corner of Peachtree Street and Peachtree Place that was once home to Atlanta’s finest boutique dress shop and restaurants in the 1970s and 80s, has long been a bustling intersection for Midtown residents and workers. In order to accommodate the community’s stated interests in creating more public open space, and to improve safety and access for people on foot, Midtown Alliance and the City of Atlanta’s Office of Mobility Planning are exploring ideas to redevelop open space on the northwest corner into a "parklet."

Midtown Alliance recently hosted an onsite input session within the proposed space to request feedback on the preliminary design concepts. More than 70 people gave feedback on the designs presented, and enhancements they would like to see implemented.

“I will personally enjoy this public space once it’s done, and I will enjoy seeing other people use it too,” said neighboring resident Eleanor E. “That’s the exciting part of city life – seeing people enjoying public spaces like this.”

Throughout the three-hour session, Midtown Alliance staff, along with representatives from the City of Atlanta and design firm Sylvatica Studio, answered questions about the proposed project. Midtown Alliance, in conjunction with its partners, will examine the feedback received at the session and use it to refine the concept, drawing on years of experience with designing and actively managing other parks in the Midtown Improvement District.

Get to Know the Project

The proposed Commercial Row Commons project would benefit the Midtown community in several ways: first, the repurposing of six on-street parking spaces will create usable, public space for patrons of the Commercial Row retailers and the neighborhood as a whole; second, the sidewalk’s clear space will be expanded to better accommodate the hundreds of people walking along this block each day; third, the realignment of the Peachtree Place and Peachtree Street intersection would improve safety for pedestrians by shortening the crossing distance.

The project is currently in concept development. Proposed enhancements include: repurposing up to 26 feet of roadway and median area with open space for gathering, adding landscape enhancements, sidewalk and curb ramp repairs, enhancing pedestrian lighting, and resurfacing Peachtree Place between Crescent Avenue and Peachtree Street.
