Dirt continues to move at the corner of Peachtree and 10th Streets, where the vision for a new park space and a central neighborhood anchor is becoming more real by the day. The project is 100% funded by the Midtown Improvement District and a longstanding partnership with the Dewberry Foundation, which leases the space to Midtown Alliance for $1 per year. Here's a quick look in pictures at how the project is coming along, plus a historical view into the distant past of this prominent corner ... and a sneak peek at a fun event coming in November to celebrate the park's reopening.

Enhancements to 10th Street Park will yield a fenced dog park, a play area for young people, and a space for lawn games.

Closer Look: More than 3,000 respondents have taken our Community Survey since it launched in early September. We're beginning to sift through the results and connect the findings to our organization's near-term work plan. One thing that bears out is that Midtown is a place where people like to walk their dogs. Have you completed our survey yet? There's still time! Please head over now to the survey and weigh in on what you want to see more of in Midtown.

The early activity in September was around grading the site and framing out the three “rooms” with curbing. The center of the park will be covered with artificial turf as a soft surface to play on.

In addition, some drainage infrastructure was installed in the space, and more recently crews stood up the play structure. The structure features LED lighting on the inside that glows at night.

Back in the day ...

In the late-1800s, the lot was on the edge of a ravine that was a haven for thieves and robbers. It remained in a state of disrepair for many years. Then in the late-1970s, the Midtown Business Association worked with the Army Corps of Engineers to regrade the site and turn it into a greenspace. Image courtesy Georgia State Archives.
