Midtown’s 10th Street Temporary Park is being transformed to create even more outdoor amenities that can be enjoyed by everyone who spends time in the community.

This project is the result of a longstanding relationship with Dewberry Foundation that continues to add to quality of life in the district.

“We are delighted to see the property used to create this pocket park for the pure enjoyment of both Atlanta’s citizens and visitors alike,” stated Jaimie Brown Dewberry, Director of the Dewberry Foundation.

The park at 10th and Peachtree Streets has hosted lawn games and seating for many years, as well as holiday lighting installations. Now, the space will be redesigned into three outdoor “rooms:” one for games, one with a climbable structure, and one with a fenced dog park. Funding for these enhancements is provided by the Midtown Improvement District.

More open space is a priority for people who spend time in Midtown. According to the 2019 Midtown Community Survey, which drew participation from nearly 5,000 respondents, 95% of those who live in, work in or visit the district want to see more access to small parks and plazas.

We have all seen that functional outdoor spaces have taken on increased importance over the last two years,” said Midtown Alliance President and CEO Kevin Green. “And these spaces will be even more important as Midtown continues to come back to full strength.”

Upgrades to the park follow the installation of Conversation Peace, a sculpture by artist Kevin Box that was unveiled at the corner of 10th and Peachtree Streets in November 2021. Conversation Peace is a sculptural interpretation of the game Rock-Paper-Scissors, with the artist using these objects to symbolize conflicting forces that have found balance.

Look for more public art from Midtown Heart of the Arts Studio Residents in the form of a new mural by Jasmine Nicole Williams on the building wall at the north end of the park. Plans are underway for Williams to begin painting later in July.

Sculptural seating complete with color-changing LED lighting will also be installed in the middle room of the park. Designed by Fabio Novembre for Vondom, the set comes in separate pieces that fit together like a ribbon, creating both functional seating and a glowing sculpture that will light the structure at night.

Long before it was a park space, the northeast corner of 10th and Peachtree Streets was a ravine. A group of Midtown business leaders partnered with the Army Corps of Engineers in the late 1970s to fill in and grade the land, creating a greenspace that would later become surrounded by major development projects. John Dewberry bought the block in the late 1990s and has maintained the partnership with Midtown Alliance ever since.

Midtown Alliance worked with Lord Aeck Sargent on updates to the park. The contractor is Ruppert Landscape and the project is scheduled to commence in July 2022. Stay tuned for more details about the 10th Street Park enhancements here.
