'Living Infographics' Highlight Midtown Commuter Habits, Retail Preferences

We would like to to thank Sarah Lawrence for bringing the interactive public art project, Living Infographic©, to the 2018 Midtown Alliance Annual Meeting. Participants at the event helped us collect data by tying yarn between variables that answered questions centered around commuting and retail. The activity resulted in colorful visual representations of the types of retail people want to see in Midtown as well as the habits of Midtown-bound commuters.
Studying Your Commute in Midtown
70% of Midtown-bound workers surveyed have a commute length that is less than 30 minutes. While over half of surveyed commuters indicated they still primarily drive alone, 41% of participants indicated that they either walk, bike, take transit, or use a blend of modes to get to work in Midtown. Retail in Midtown
We wanted to learn which areas within Midtown the participants spend most of their time, and the types of retail offerings they would want to see in the future. Using a parallel coordinate model, we also gathered information about age demographics and their relationship to Midtown (live, work, visitor). What did we find out? Clothing, dining, and grocery stores dominated among retail preferences within Midtown. View the full results here.
