June 2021 DRC Recap: 1200 Peachtree St. to See Site Improvements

At the June 8 meeting, the Midtown DRC was pleased to hear a presentation by Cousins Properties for site improvements that would rejuvenate the current Norfolk Southern Headquarters located at 1200 Peachtree Street.
About the Project:
- Originally built in 1981, the building is angled on the SW corner of Peachtree St. and 15th St. It has generous outdoor areas that will be updated with site improvements
- New hardscape and landscape elements at the front of the building are intended to improve accessibility and curb appeal. These improvements will tie into the redesign of the corner, being implemented by Midtown Alliance this summer, to create a new site for the 30-foot-tall Sabine Woman sculpture as a focal point for Arts District Plaza.
- At the rear of the building an existing structured covered walkway will be rebuilt to connect the project to the neighboring Promenade building. The parking area will be reconfigured to enhance the drop-off experience for visitors. Also, renovation to the back garden is planned to provide for more active use of the space.
- A new coffee kiosk is being considered among other improvements to enhance the building’s interior lobby.

DRC Recommendations:
The DRC offered support for the project overall with minor comments. The committee recommended several changes such as widening the narrow sidewalk along Peachtree St., installing an ADA ramp for the new mid-block crossing on Peachtree St., relocating the proposed bike storage facility near the rear entry, and installing an EV charging station in the small parking area.
