Popular “MIDTOWN” Letters Make Comeback at New 14th Street Public Space

Following a seven-year hiatus, a beloved Midtown cultural icon made its return earlier this week. A new version of the iconic “MIDTOWN” letters installation is back for an encore, this time at Midtown Green, the new outdoor public space on 14th Street created by Midtown Alliance.
The Return of a Joyful Community Symbol
It’s a full-circle moment for the outdoor installation that brought joy to many people when it first appeared on the sidewalk outside Colony Square in 2016.
The oversized letters – which derive their all-caps silhouette, signature horizontal divide, and vibrant color scheme from Midtown Alliance’s neighborhood brand – quickly became the favorite backdrop for tens of thousands of people to capture photos and post them on social media, commemorating their Midtown visit.
“There’s something powerful about turning neighborhood pride into something people can see, touch and experience together," said Ansley Whipple, project manager at Midtown Alliance. "These seven giant letters give Midtown Green a playful sense of identity and invite people to pause, connect and make a memory. We hope they become a backdrop for the everyday moments that make a public space feel like it belongs to everyone.”
A Timeless Crowd Pleaser
The sign was originally introduced as Colony Square’s team began delivering their schedule of community events while also planning for the major overhaul of their property. The letters were later retired as part of the final phases of Colony Square's massive multimillion-dollar redevelopment, which redesigned the pedestrian streetscape to open up the property.
A decade later, Midtown Alliance is working on a parallel path that features the “MIDTOWN” letters as a way to draw people in to experience the temporary phase of its project, as it works to build a following and realize the long-term vision for a premier attraction in the city, filled with art and activities.
Inside the Making of the Letters
Fabricating the letters occurred over the summer at Arc Design, an Atlanta production design studio and custom fabrication house. Constructed of plywood on internal wood frame supports, each letter stands 8 feet tall and measures 24 inches in depth. The letters are painted with weather-resistant paint and clearcoat to help them stand up to the elements.

Find Midtown Green at 98 14th St., across from the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta. It’s one block south from the Arts Center MARTA station, and there is bike parking onsite. Self-paid parking is also available in the Promenade deck, accessible from 14th and 15th St.
Midtown Green is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset.
