Love Local: From Paws to Claws, CityVet Midtown Provides Total Care for Pets

BY BRIAN CARR
Dr. Cathy Fish tells a poignant story from her childhood about how she found her calling as a veterinarian. When she was five, her family’s puppy was struck by a car. Fish said the tragedy resonated with her so much that she wanted to channel her compassion for animals into helping other people take care of theirs.
And as Dr. Fish describes it, veterinary medicine allows her to put her hands on many different facets of care. Her CityVet Midtown practice at West Peachtree and 15th Street is the only intown CityVet location in Atlanta. It was also the first veterinary location to land in the Midtown Improvement District after zoning rules were updated.
We sat down with Dr. Fish to learn more about CityVet Midtown and what her practice offers. Read more.
The First Veterinary Clinic to Open in the Midtown Improvement District
If you’re among the thousands of Midtown residents who own a pet, you have a great resource for care that’s centrally located and walkable. Dr. Cathy Fish and her team run CityVet Midtown, a full-service veterinary hospital providing preventative care, vaccinations, wellness exams, and even an in-house lab for blood work and urinalysis.
“We do everything,” Dr. Fish said of her Midtown practice. “We do well visits, we do sick visits, we do dentistry, we do diagnostics. So while humans have to visit multiple doctors and specialists for care, I get to do it all as a veterinarian.”
And as the practice has grown, the Midtown CityVet hours of operation are also expanding: Dr. Fish shared that the clinic is now providing urgent care seven days a week, and she’ll be adding staff to accommodate the bigger schedule.
“Instead of having to refer to an emergency clinic, our patients are now able to come to us,” Dr. Fish said. “So if your dog has an ear infection, rather than waiting until Monday, we can see you on Saturday or Sunday. Or if your pet becomes injured, we can perform surgeries as well.”
Operating a Vet Clinic in Midtown? It’s a Different Animal.
According to Dr. Fish, who is originally from North Georgia, running a vet practice in the heart of the city brings challenges and opportunities. For one, the office does not have any dedicated customer parking, but there are paid parking decks nearby. So CityVet Midtown provides some relief to driving clientele with a small discount off their veterinary services to offset parking costs.
But the clinic is strategically located right next to a major improvement project that will soon be a gamechanger for their operations.

The 15th Street Extension project will provide a new connection on Midtown’s street grid, creating more access for people from West Peachtree Street to Williams Street. This also means more visibility for CityVet because it will occupy a street corner. And Dr. Fish explained that having this street extension will also make it easier to safely take patients out for quick walks. The project, which is being implemented by Midtown Alliance, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Read more about it here.
From Fur to Feathers, Serving a Menagerie of Clients
Midtown’s identity as a walkable place with access to greenspace has attracted lots of residents who live in multifamily buildings and own dogs. In fact, the 2025 Midtown Community Survey found that 28% of residents own a dog. But Dr. Fish notes her patient roster is split almost 50-50 between dogs and cats. Her team also sees a decent number of exotic birds and reptiles, and “pocket pets,” like rabbits and hamsters that are right-sized for apartment and condo living.
Our conversation with Dr. Fish also surfaced an important public service announcement for Midtown pet owners that needs to be amplified. When asked about patient encounters that have surprised her team, she noted one issue that comes up surprisingly often. Her office has handled a number of cases involving dogs getting high after accidentally ingesting drugs, especially CBD gummies. When you finish reading this, please take a minute to make sure your pills and gummies are safely out of reach.

Building Relationships with Midtown Pet Owners
The CityVet Midtown team has plugged into the Midtown community to raise their visibility as a resource for local pet owners. From signing on as a proud Midtown Alliance member, to hosting booths at outdoor community events like the Midtown Mutt Gala and Atlanta Streets Alive, to visiting residential buildings with goodies for pet owners, the staff have embraced Midtown’s neighborhood feel.
“We love Midtown and what it represents,” Dr. Fish said. “We’re on a mission to provide excellent care rooted in kindness for people and their pets.”
