Restaurant Roundup: 2019 Openings Diversify Midtown’s Dining Scene

New announcements range from fast-casual health food to Southern speakeasy

Midtown is already one of the city’s top dining destinations, with 150+ restaurants located within 1.2 square miles. We saw a strong continued interest in adding even more food options in the results of our 2019 Midtown Community Survey, with 67 percent of respondents indicating they want more restaurants in the district. Great news — there are lots of new spots opening soon that should please a variety of palates! Check out our list below:

Freshii

One of three recent announcements for the redeveloped Colony Square, Freshii is a fast-casual restaurant with globally inspired salads, wraps, bowls, burritos and soups. Watch for its opening this fall in Colony Square’s Building 100, across from Starbucks. It will be owned and operated by Atlanta-native Dustin Saboorian, who also owns East Atlanta Village bar and music venue Graveyard Tavern. 

A “fine-casual” concept from James Beard Award-nominated Steve Palmer and the Indigo Road team, known for Oak Steakhouse, Donetto and O-Ku, Sukoshi will reportedly offer a 30-minute omakase experience for $30.

A “fine-casual” concept from James Beard Award-nominated Steve Palmer and the Indigo Road team, known for Oak Steakhouse, Donetto and O-Ku, Sukoshi will reportedly offer a 30-minute omakase experience for $30. The original Sukoshi in Charlotte also offers sushi burritos, rolls, dim sum and frozen yogurt. Its Atlanta counterpart is slated to open later this year in a 2,000-square-foot space at Colony Square.

 

Rumi’s Kitchen

Replacing what was once planned to be Iselle Kitchen and Bar, Persian restaurant Rumi’s Kitchen will open at the corner of Peachtree and 14th Streets just in time for Colony Square’s grand reopening in May 2020. This will be the restaurateur’s third Atlanta location for the brand — it also has locations in Sandy Springs and North American Properties’ Avalon in Alpharetta. Its robust menu includes dips, stew, falafel and kabobs. 

 

The former Community Smith inside the Renaissance Atlanta Midtown Hotel has undergone a rebrand inspired by the district’s periods of prohibition in the early 20th century.

Rowdy Tiger Whiskey Bar

The former Community Smith inside the Renaissance Atlanta Midtown Hotel has undergone a rebrand inspired by the district’s periods of prohibition in the early 20th century. Rowdy Tiger Whiskey Bar & Kitchen channels the district's unruly past, which included local speakeasies known as “blind tigers.'” Serving more than 125 whiskeys and whiskey cocktails, Rowdy Tiger boasts one of the largest whiskey collections in the city, complemented by a quintessentially American menu. The Rowdy Tiger Rooftop offers panoramic views, small bites, firepit seating and outdoor games.

 

First announced in October 2018, this Southern European eatery is opening this fall inside the lilli Midtown apartment community.

Lyla Lila

First announced in October 2018, this Southern European eatery is opening this fall inside the lilli Midtown apartment community. It’s a concept from restaurateur Billy Streck, co-owner of Cypress Street Pint and Plate, and chef Craig Richards, who has overseen the kitchens of La Tavola, Ecco and St. Cecelia. Diners can expect Italian and Spanish influences, seasonal ingredients and wine selections with an “old world” emphasis. Smith Hanes Studio is designing the interior of the space to have a bohemian feel with organic textures, including wood.

 

26 Thai Kitchen & Bar

A popular Thai restaurant in Lindbergh is opening a new Midtown location on Juniper Street in the former MuLan space. The restaurant, known for its Pad See Ewe and Drunken Noodles, is set for a summer 2019 opening, according to its Facebook page. If this location is anything like the original in Lindbergh, expect an upscale interior, an extensive cocktail program and lots of shareable options. 

 

E Ramen

The ground floor of the Northside Medical building soon will be home to E Ramen, a sister restaurant of West Midtown hotspot Eight Sushi Lounge. A recently launched Facebook page indicated the restaurant is targeting an early fall open date.

 

Sugar Factory

Sugar Factory has filed permits to open in the former Mi Cocina space in the 12th and Midtown development. Sugar Factory has retail and restaurant locations around the world. Its restaurants serve everything from pancakes and sweet and savory crepes to salads, burgers and shakes. Its New York City location’s King Kong Sundae is legendary and can feed up to 12 people, with 24 scoops of ice cream and more than a dozen toppings.

 

Chipotle Mexican Grill

Fast-casual burrito king Chipotle began filing permits to open next to the former Mi Cocina spot at the end of 2018. Midtown residents, workers and visitors with a big appetite could be able to satisfy their craving without leaving the district by the end of the year. 

 

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

We heard from Community Survey respondents that you’d like to see more ice cream parlors in Midtown, and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams soon will be ready to scoop up favorites like Wildberry Lavender and Goat Cheese with Red Cherries inside Coda’s food hall, The Collective. Previously announced stalls at The Collective include El Burro Pollo Burrito Kitchen, Poke Burri, Aviva by Kameel, Wildleaf and a coffee shop from Thrive Farmers.
